Safety and reliability are our priority.

We provide professional electrical services with a strong focus on keeping homes compliant, safe and protected.

Every job, whether it is a single power point or a full switchboard, starts from the same question: will this keep the people who use it safe for years after we leave? That is the standard behind Craimatt Electrical.

Domestic, commercial and industrial electrical work, done to the Wiring Rules.

From a single power point to a plant switchboard, every job we take on is installed, inspected and tested to AS/NZS 3000, the Australian and New Zealand Wiring Rules, and to the electrical safety requirements that apply in Western Australia.

Much of our work is looking after what is already there: finding faults, maintaining installations, and inspecting and testing them so problems are found before they cause harm. New work is built to last, and existing work is kept safe.

Domestic

Electrical work for homes, from a single new circuit to a full renovation or extension. When a house is renovated or extended, its electrical system has to grow with it: new circuits, power and lighting for the new space, and a switchboard that can safely carry the extra load.

We plan the work around how you will actually use the space, and we test it before we hand it back.

  • Renovations and extensionsNew circuits, power and lighting for added or reworked rooms, and switchboard upgrades to suit the new load.
  • EV charger installationA home charger fitted on its own circuit, with your switchboard checked to suit. More below.
  • Fault finding and repairsTripping safety switches, dead circuits, and lights or power points that no longer work.
  • Switchboards and safety switchesBringing older boards up to date so the home is properly protected.
  • Smoke alarm installation and replacementOur specialty, covered in full in the smoke alarm section below.

Commercial

Electrical installations and commercial electrical maintenance for shops, offices and other commercial sites, where a fault costs time and money.

We install new power, lighting and switchboards, and look after existing installations through planned maintenance and fault finding, so the site keeps running safely.

  • Commercial electrical maintenancePlanned maintenance that keeps switchboards, lighting and power in safe working order.
  • Installations and upgradesPower, lighting and distribution for new and existing commercial premises.
  • Fault findingTracing and fixing faults on commercial circuits and equipment.
  • Inspection and testingChecked and tested to AS/NZS 3000, with a record of what was tested.

Industrial

Industrial electrical services for workshops, plant and larger sites, where the loads are heavier and a fault carries greater consequences.

We carry out installation, maintenance and fault finding on industrial electrical systems with the same safety first approach, and the same testing, that we bring to a family home.

  • Industrial electrical servicesInstallation, maintenance and repair of industrial electrical systems.
  • Switchboards and distributionPower distribution to equipment and machinery.
  • Fault finding and maintenanceDiagnosing electrical faults and keeping equipment in safe working order.
  • Testing and verificationInspection and testing to AS/NZS 3000 before work is returned to service.

Fault finding and electrical maintenance

An electrical fault rarely explains itself. A safety switch that keeps tripping, a circuit that has gone dead or lights that flicker can each have several possible causes, some harmless and some not. We work methodically and test the circuit rather than guess, so the fault is found and fixed at its source.

For homes and businesses that want fewer surprises, regular electrical maintenance keeps installations safe, reliable and in line with the standards they were built to. It applies equally to a family home, a commercial site and an industrial workshop.

EV charger installation

Charging an electric vehicle puts a heavy load on your electrical system for hours at a time, so the wiring behind the charger matters. We install EV chargers on their own circuit, check that your switchboard and supply can carry the extra load, and test the installation to AS/NZS 3000 before we hand it over.

We can help you decide where the charger should go, such as a garage wall or carport. If you charge in the garage, we can also fit the detection that fire authorities recommend wherever batteries are charged.

Inspection and testing to Australian Standards

We carry out general electrical inspections and testing on new and existing installations, to AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules. That covers the work we install and any older home or workplace where you simply want to know the electrical system is safe.

Verification follows the standard's sequence, with each step tested and recorded before an installation is energised or returned to service.

  • Visual inspection

The installation, equipment and workmanship are checked before any testing begins.

  • Earth continuity

Protective earthing is confirmed intact from the switchboard to the outlets and equipment.

  • Insulation resistance

Conductors are confirmed properly insulated from each other and from earth.

  • Polarity

Active, neutral and earth are confirmed connected where they should be.

  • Safety switches (RCDs)

Each is confirmed to operate when it should.

The alarm on your ceiling has a use-by date.

Smoke alarms are an essential part of every home's safety system. But like any electronic device, they wear out. Alarms that are 10 years or older should be replaced so they keep providing reliable protection.

The difficulty is that an old alarm looks exactly like a working one. Nothing on the ceiling tells you it has reached the end of its life. The only way to know is to check the date.

This is not only our view. The Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency Services states that all smoke and heat alarms must be replaced every 10 years, including hardwired alarms. Read the DFES guidance.

The number 10, with the zero drawn as a smoke alarm seen from below

The zero is a ceiling alarm. Most have a date code on the back.

How old is your alarm?

Twist the alarm off its base and look for the date code on the back. Choose the year it was made, not the year it was installed.

If you cannot find a date, the alarm is probably old. Use "I can't find a date" below.

What a Craimatt alarm check covers

Hardwired alarms must be installed or replaced by a licensed electrician. Requirements vary with the age and use of the property, so we confirm what applies to yours.

  • Age

The date code on every alarm, so nothing is assumed.

  • Type and position

The right device in the right place.

  • Compliance

Whether your alarms meet the requirements that apply to your property, and what needs to change if they do not.

  • The garage

What is charging out there, and whether anything gives early warning.

What is charging in your garage tonight?

More household batteries, power tools, e-bikes and other rechargeable equipment are being stored and charged in garages than ever before. That brings an electrical and battery related fire risk that deserves far more awareness.

  • E-bikes
  • E-scooters
  • Power tool batteries
  • Garden equipment
  • Spare packs and chargers

A fire can develop quickly. Early warning gives you time to respond, and can stop a small incident becoming a major fire.

Where the first alarm sounds changes everything.

Alarms in the hallway and bedrooms only sound once smoke reaches them. Start a fire in the garage and compare having detection there with having none.

Safer charging habits

  • Stay close. Avoid leaving batteries or devices unattended while they charge, and avoid charging overnight.
  • Keep it clear. Charge on a hard surface, away from blankets, clothing, paper and anything that burns easily.
  • Use the right charger. Only the one supplied with the device, or a certified one that suits the battery.
  • Check the battery. Stop using any battery that is damaged or swollen.
  • Add early warning. Fit a smoke alarm or thermal detector where devices are charged, especially in the garage.

Based on advice from the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Read the DFES guidance.

What Craimatt can do for your garage

Install early warning detection suited to your garage or charging area, so a small incident is caught while there is still time to respond. And talk through what is charging out there, plainly and without alarm.

A new business, built on over thirty years of experience.

Craimatt Electrical is new. Our experience is not.

With over 30 years of hands-on work in electrical installation behind us, we bring the judgement that only comes from time on the tools: knowing what to look for, what to question, and what to put right before it becomes a problem.

That experience shows in how we work. Installations, renovations, repairs and inspections are carried out to the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) and the safety requirements that apply in Western Australia, and the work is tested before it is handed back to you.

It is also why we treat smoke alarm compliance and early fire detection as a specialty, not an add-on. It is where careful electrical work and real-world safety meet.

Straight answers.

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

When they reach 10 years old, or earlier if the manufacturer's expiry date is sooner. The date code is on the back of the alarm. The 10 year limit applies to hardwired alarms as well as battery powered ones.

Can I replace a hardwired alarm myself?

No. Alarms connected to mains power must be installed or replaced by a licensed electrician.

Does my garage need a smoke alarm or a heat alarm?

The WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services recommends a smoke alarm or thermal detector wherever devices are charged, especially garages. Which device suits yours depends on the space, because dust and fumes in a garage can set off an ordinary smoke alarm. We recommend the right one for your garage.

Is it safe to charge an e-bike or power tool battery overnight?

Fire authorities advise against leaving batteries and devices charging unattended or overnight. Charge on a hard surface away from anything flammable, use the charger supplied with the device, and make sure there is suitable detection in the area.
